4 – L1 – Justification

This is a simple explanation of your final chosen concept. You should by now have completed Pugh’s Matrix to help clarify your chosen concept.This is not yet your final design, simply your chosen concept.

Throughout the concept stage you should have referred back to the QFD and PDS, and at this point you should discuss your chosen concept in relation to those ‘must have’ requirements stated earlier in the project. You might want to draw the reader’s attention to specific areas you feel need further explanation and better understanding. Use diagrams to help explain your point.
You may have decided not to adhere to one of the requirements, because either it was unachievable or you don’t think it was necessary. If this is the case, your justification needs to be very strong; in the real world, if you don’t perform to the customer’s expectations, you don’t get paid.

A simple way to structure the justification is simply to use the list from Pugh’s Matrix and talk about each field individually as is Table 1.
